Save me from myself

It had gotten too hard to lie to himself anymore; he was a motherfucking wreck. After his therapist transferred out of the state work and into a private practice, he couldn't afford to pay the guy what he was charging, and the idea of starting up a new dialogue with some unknown motherfucker didn't sound appealing to Gamzee at all. He'd done that before, and it was shaky ground for nearly a year with this guy before he started feeling really at peace with letting himself be all of himself around the guy.

But with no therapist, there was no way to get his medication. At least one of the meds was something that had refills for a year - the inhibitors that kept the whispers out and kept the dark motherfucker somewhat controllable in his pan would last long enough, but the rest of it, the shit that knocked him out, the shit that kept his forepan balanced in the meanwhile? That had run out two weeks ago. It was a pretty hard spiral downward after the first week, and this week hadn't even had the courtesy of a spiral. It was straight motherfucking down, in a nosedive of anger and guilt and ungodly memories that bubbled through and trickled into his sponge, reminding him that there was a reason he was alone, and that there was a reason for those motherfucking scars down his face.

Gamzee hadn't called in three days, and only had the presence of mind to talk to his boss the night before locking up to tell him what had been going down five days prior, and asked for a week or two off so he didn't wind up hurting anybody. His boss marked him down for vacation and asked the highblood to find something fast for the sake of his own health.

He hadn't. The idea of doing it all over again, breaking another person under the weight of his fucking problems was too much for him. He should have just been committed again after all. Fucking motherfuck, he wasn't safe.

So that was why he was still in his place, shivering under the cover of a heavy blanket, grinding his teeth and muttering to himself in an argument. Ain't nobody gonna come, Tavros ain't even texted. Who the fuckdo you think you is, tryin' to be all up and savin' yourself? Let go, you spineless motherfuck.Let me do this shit up, you know I got what it motherfuckin' takes to keep you from crackin'. You just be gettin' your rest on, brother, get your shit all bedded down. Let me handle it. You know you tired. Ain't no motherfuckin' thing. Make like Elsa and just let motherfuckin' go.

For once, the ugly motherfucker had a point. He was exhausted. And thus far, the malicious end to him had behaved himself. But shit, he knew it wouldn't take much for him to get started. And then get they-all in trouble. But he was so tired. Just a little bit wouldn't hurt, right?

Right?

"Gamzee, if we were in a place like Alternia, you know you would want to make them act more according to Alternian law. We still wouldn't be equal, with what you're saying. Only they would be the ones that are trodden on, and we would be on top, and that still wouldn't be right no matter how you try to justify it. What the Guardians are trying to do, to integrate us into a world that's not ours with the intent of letting us all live here on equal ground, that's what I want to hope for. And if maintaining something more peaceful than what we're used to is the way to do it, then yeah, that's what I'm gonna go with. I don't care if it's human shit. Human shit is what's allowed me to survive. The system here has given me more of a chance than I ever would have had if we were home. Even if you hadn't been the one assigned to cull me, it still would have happened, one way or another, because I was not viable. But now I am. So no, I'm not trying to bow under human ways or take anything up way too hard. I'm just trying to live in the only way that I know I have a chance. If you're not happy with that then...then what am I supposed to do? Just trade everything back? Because you don't think that we should live this way?"

Tavros stood, picking up Tink to use as a comfort object to try and even out his voice, which had started to rise in pitch and quake the longer he spoke. He pressed his nose against the top of her head when she squeaked at him, starting to pace slowly. "You're living on rules that aren't exactly viable here, Gamzee. By your logic, I'm letting myself be a slave to them and their laws. The them that you hate so much, they're not the ones that made the rules that we live under. If they were, I wouldn't be alive and you wouldn't be around to help me. You probably would be around at all. You and Equius both, you would have been locked away and never released because you would be deemed insane and he'd be a terrorist and nobody would listen to anyone lobbying for you."

"I'm not saying that you owe me anything," he continued, standing on the other side of the room and looking back at Gamzee. "You did so much by yourself. You have a life here, under the rules that allow us to actually coexist, in spite of that culling urge, that whisper in your blood that makes you want to enforce laws that aren't even a thing here. You can't take down anyone. It's not your responsibility. Not anymore."

Tavros' expression froze and his lip and chin wobbled just the slightest bit, nearly hidden by the cat's ruff as he stared back at Gamzee for several seconds after his tirade.

"Yeah, thanks for reminding me that I'm not going to be around long enough to see what becomes of this world. It's not like that thought has occurred to me every time I consider the difference in our blood. I really needed that realization that I'm going to grow up and...and the world will just go on without me whether I like it or not and that I won't be able to make sure that things are going to be ok for you, or anyone else. That I won't be there to make sure that if anyone did decide you didn't deserve to have your life, that nothing happened to you, because just like home this place can have some hateful fucking people. Just like everywhere else in the universe. Just like home, no matter how different it is. And your being so fucking vocal about how stupid all of this is doesn't exactly do anything, and going out and acting like you're the one that's supposed to be policing this place is going to accomplish even less. But it's not like that will matter to me, right? Because I won't be here to see it when you're old and long in the teeth.

"Before this place is solid, we will have a system in place that will make sure that those of us that will be living in it for a while, and the ones that will come after, will be ok. Don't start a civil war here or there really will be nothing left for anyone else except ruins and rulers that don't know what to do with anyone. You're thinking like the Condescension and you're not even a tyrian."

Tavros pressed his lips together tightly, glaring back at Gamzee for all of two seconds before letting Tink go and heading back toward his bedroom instead, hoping to sit down in the dark and quiet for a while to stop his ears from ringing.

Tavros stared down at the messages for a long while, letting Gamzee pace a minute longer before finally replying, pLEASE COME BACK,

By the time he could hear his matesprit outside the door, he was out in the kitchen, drinking deeply from a highball glass filled with some cocktail of things kept about as high as he could reach out of the way. He rinsed his mouth out when it was empty and he was slightly nauseous, then simply stood with his back against the counter, facing the wall opposite the front door, his arms crossed tight over his chest. He didn't really expect Gamzee to come back in, even with permission granted.

"That's what I was saying," Tavros replied, turning around to lean his elbows against the counter, hands tented in front of his face. "This responsibility that you think you have to keep everyone in line, it's not your responsibility. Not anymore. You are one of the last highbloods and if you end up hurt or dead somehow, then there won't be anyone.

"But you're smart," he continued, "one of the smartest people I've ever met. I know there's a lot more to you than just your obligation to your caste and your gods. If you were needed to keep the peace and enforce what we have, you would have been made a Guardian rather than being left down here with the rest of us. I bet you would have been a good one, if you had to do it, but you don't. You have a life here and even if it's a quiet one surrounded by people like that, just...try to focus on the rest of us. Me and game group and those people you talk to every day at the store. The ones that are getting huge heads and thinking they're superior just because they're not us, they don't even deserve this anger and the energy you're putting into it."

Tavros finally made his way back to Gamzee's side, sitting down on the floor there next to him. "You don't have to be the one enforcing our ideals. Whatever your pan's whispering to the contrary, your only responsibility is to you now. If you think anything different, then talk to one of the Guardians. Give them your concerns. They might need this feedback, especially if they're going to put the changes into effect. That way, nobody gets hurt, and nobody can point fingers. You have a brilliant way with words, I know you can convince them to come around and actually help us." He reached up gingerly and laid his hand against he side of Gamzee's head, dragging his claws behind is matesprit's ear briefly then letting his hand rest at Gamzee's neck.

"That's why you talk to the ones that are in charge of all of this. They're tweaking and rewriting history to make the transition easier before our reality is actually real. I guarantee that there are trolls among the Guardians that will want to hear what you have to say. And the humans would benefit from hearing it too." Laying his hand against Gamzee's jaw opposite where he'd leaned his head, Tavros sighed deeply, dragging his legs up and picking at the inseam of his pants. "Just because things are shaky now, doesn't mean they always will be. When I'm gone, I at least hope that you'll have a more stable system to work with, but you can only achieve that by working with what you have here. Shape it with your mind instead of your clubs. Other highbloods would be the ones that would benefit the most from it."

"You're not broken though. At least not in any way that really matters, when you get down to it. You're smart in that sideways kind of way that sometimes, people really need instead of running into a problem head-on or working around it. I know you can do a lot. It's just a matter of showing the rest of them. I know there are people that have talked to you that know it, too." Leaning heavily against Gamzee's shoulder, Tavros took ahold of his hand, holding it in both of his own until he spoke up again. The only response was a shake of his head. He hated himself for the outburst and the hurtful things he knew he'd said without thinking. "We're both being kind of stupid about all of this. Haven't even done what we set out to do in the firs place."

"Knew it would come back to that," Tavros chuckled quietly, finally cracking a soft smile and butting his head against Gamzee's cheek before kissing the corner of his mouth. "But I meant tracking you down some new medication so that you could function enough to be able to work again. This is ok too though."

"I don't think the kitchen floor is really the best place for that," Tavros pointed out, breaking the kiss and standing up with a quiet groan then stumbling slightly, his drink finally starting to go to his head. He shook it a little then rubbed his hand over Gamzee's hear, scratching between his horns. He offered a hand to help Gamzee to his feet, then pull him into another, longer kiss. "Thanks for not leaving," he murmured against the other's lips before taking him by the hand and heading back toward the bedroom, nudging his cat out of where she was laying in the middle of the doorway so that they could shut the door behind them.
